Generally, art must speak for itself; it reaches you or it doesn’t. But
I offer some personal background here, for those who would like a fuller explanation of my work, because I see so much of my own life in my pieces.
I was born in Barcelona, Spain, in the sixties, a very different
Barcelona from the world capital we now know. At that time, not
everything made sense because of the political situation. My
generation’s main goal was freedom and freedom of expression.
My early work brought the world of my youth into balance. Those
paintings reflect the Bauhaus influence, its geometry and functionality.
In geometry, everything works; it is measured and in balance. Its
predictability is pleasant, as life should be.
As I evolved as a person, so did my art. My work became more textural. I began to GET IT: Life doesn't work like a geometric game. Things are not perfect; the Platonic Ideal does not exist – certainly not in man.
Since then, I have been reflecting in my work, step by step, the energy
and passion that are the motors of life. From the imperfection that is
us comes beauty; an incredibly luscious, sweet beauty.
In 2009, after many years in San Francisco, I had a great opportunity to work in my country. In the mountains of Catalonia, in solitude and with nature as my inspiration, I came to an even greater connection with my work. No more ropes.
I am only a bridge for this fountain of sensuality that I feel between
the universe and the canvas. The more raw the material, the more
beautiful it is, and If I can make it work with a symbolic contrast such
as lace, even better.
These new works represent an acceptance of myself as the sensorial being that I am. Life is not only to be seen; it is to be sensed and touched. My art wants to be touched and smelled, as life should.
The colors are no longer as bright as in my earlier collections. Hues
have muted and deepened because real passion for the things you love comes from deep insight. And with that insight, the world becomes more pleasant, and less scary.
